YouTube solutions to problems I can't anticipate
This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for YouTube solutions to problems I can’t anticipate.
The other day, about an hour after I got out of bed, the back part of my nose ring fell into my hand. This prompted me to look in the mirror and confirm that the front part of my nose ring was missing.
Fortunately, I was able to locate the front part of my nose ring, but unfortunately, I had absolutely no clue how to reinsert (reinstall?) a nose ring.
Fast forward to late afternoon; for most of the day I had carried around these two tiny pieces of metal, hoping not to lose them as I periodically fumbled attempts to stab the pins back together through my flesh.
And then I remembered: the internet knows everything! Sure enough, within five minutes I had identified the specific style of jewelry I was dealing with (threadless, aka flat back, aka push pin), and I’d also found a YouTube video showing me exactly what I needed to do.
I assure you, I would have NEVER thought to insert a sewing needle into my piercing, but the solution also made perfect sense—and it worked.
Obviously it is vital to use discretion when seeking answers on the internet. There is a lot of garbage out there. Definitely a disturbing shortfall of critical thinking. But when it comes to finding practical solutions to problems that other humans have also encountered, wow, does YouTube come through.
(For example, YouTube is also the reason I can finally fold fitted sheets, and how I learned to reset my car’s warning light after an oil change.)
I really like my nose ring, but I seriously considered just letting the piercing close up—that’s how little bandwidth I had for solving such a relatively low-priority problem. So I’m grateful YouTube made it easy for me to keep something I care about.
Love > fear,
