Three Little Birds
“Don’t worry about a thing. Every little thing is going to be all right.”
Right now I think those words are true. But even when I don’t—especially when I don’t—I still need to hear them. Which is why, this #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for “Three Little Birds.”
A few weeks ago, my partner and I were away visiting family, and during our trip we came across a Hawaiian cover of Bob Marley’s iconic song.
Days later, back in Richmond and with the full implications of quarantine weighing heavy, I woke up feeling anxious. And then I heard the birds.
Every morning there is birdsong around my home, and while I have always enjoyed it, I have never found it more reassuring. These birds are simply living life, going about their business, peacefully existing in their current reality. I can’t reliably translate their melodic chatter, but I doubt they are stoking their fears.
And that day, taking comfort in the birds, I remembered hearing “Three Little Birds” on our trip.
Rise up this morning
Smile with the rising sun
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singing sweet songs
of melodies pure and true...
This is my message to you: There is plenty to worry about. But that doesn’t mean we actually have to worry.
It’s a choice to believe that everything—every little thing—will be all right. I can’t promise that truth, but I can choose to believe it, and I know I feel better when I do.
So this #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for the encouraging sounds of "Three Little Birds"—and I made us a playlist of different versions, in case, like me, you could use a soothing soundtrack.
Love > fear,
Christina
p.s. Speaking of soothing, are you getting enough rest? In addition to avoiding contact with others and washing your hands, sleeping well is one of the most important “actions” you can take these days, especially in terms of strengthening your own immune system. This article has some helpful tips for getting quality rest.
