The strong quiet voice inside me that requested tea instead of coffee
This #thankyouthursday, I’m grateful for the strong quiet voice inside me that requested tea instead of coffee.
Even more, I’m grateful I listened.
Because I almost didn’t—I really wanted coffee. But my body does not always respond well to coffee, and years of experimenting have taught me not to drink it every day. The trick is knowing which days to take a break, because I nearly always want coffee.
That’s where the strong quiet voice comes in.
Ironically (or not?), the voice is harder to hear when I’m amped up on coffee or sugar or otherwise numbed out or anxious. But when I’m willing to get still and listen, the quiet voice is there. It is gentle, but it is not weak.
And yesterday it said “no” to coffee. Yet the voice cannot control me, because while I believe the voice to be wise and spiritual, my human experience is physical, and I have free will. So I can ignore the wisdom if I choose to, which is almost what I did.
In fact, I actually said out loud, “You can’t stop me” while pouring freeze-dried granules in my cup.*
And then I heard myself talking out loud to my own inner wisdom, and I laughed, and I sighed, and I dumped the coffee back into the jar and reached for a sachet of Earl Grey.**
About fifteen minutes later my vision started to blur—telltale symptoms of an oncoming migraine. However, because I’d been sipping tea instead of chugging coffee, I was able to easily go to sleep, thereby preventing a debilitating headache that would have destroyed my day.
(Also I was able to sleep because I had child care, for which I am also very grateful.)
So this #thankyouthursday I’m appreciating meditation messages in all forms, and especially the wisdom snippets that help me stay healthy.
Love > fear,

*Yes, I drink instant. I also love the fancy stuff, but the practicality of instant can’t be beat, and anyway, mix it with steamed milk and some cinnamon and it tastes amazing.
**Though, honestly, Earl Grey with steamed milk and a splash of vanilla is also pretty great, and downright perfect on a rainy day.
