The next right thing
While it’s always been true that we can’t control OH-so-very-many things, that reality has become especially clear in recent weeks.
That’s why, this #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for the next right action.
A while back I wrote about the practice of one small step after another, saying, “even if a big shift is on the horizon, little acts of bravery are how we get there.”
I still take comfort in the contents of that post—though if I were going to update it today I’d include suggestions like “wash your hands” and “stay home when you can” and “call a friend,” or, “limit your media consumption” and “take vitamin C.”
And I certainly stand by the most basic of basics that I’ve espoused all along: “Drink some water. Take a breath. Say a prayer.”
These actions might seem small, but they help in big ways. Especially since less stress = better health = stronger immunity.
All I know for sure is that nothing is certain, and that’s okay. It’s okay to feel fear and anxiety, disappointment and overwhelm, frustration and judgment. It’s also fine to feel optimistic or relaxed or even relieved.
It’s okay to feel all the feelings. (Especially gratitude!)
Just, also keep doing the next right thing.*
Love > fear,
Christina
p.s. What’s going to be your next right thing today? I’d love for you to hit reply and let me know (or just tell me or just tell me how you’re faring with your version of social distancing, or anything else you want to share).
*And remember that sometimes the next right thing is...doing nothing! It is wise to honor the importance of rest, particularly in times of stress.
