The choice to accept or change
This #thankyouthursday, I’m grateful for the choice to accept or change.
I often pray the Serenity Prayer, which asks for the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
But recently I heard it boiled down to something even simpler: Forget trying to understand or attain serenity. Just remember you can accept or change.
Accept or change, accept or change. It’s true that, while binary choices don’t work for everything, this one nearly often applies.
Sometimes there are issues or circumstances I truly cannot accept, in which case the choice is made for me. And sometimes, I just plain cannot change something, in which case, again—there’s no choice to make.
But there’s still a way forward: Accept or change.
And more often than not, I get to choose which way I take.
I can accept that I’m not going to exercise today, or I can change my intention and haul myself up for five minutes of intentional movement. I can change my plans and come up with a side dish to bring to dinner, or I can accept that this year I’m showing up empty-handed.
It’s not that one choice is better than the other; it’s that I (usually) get to choose. And there is always guidance, readily available. And I am grateful.
Love > fear,
