Past Me and my ability to currently be with my baby
This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for Past Me and my ability to currently be with my baby.
After the last company I worked for abruptly shut down in December 2022, I had the privilege of pausing before making my next move. I took the LSAT in February 2023 and carefully considered law school.
And then, among other shifts that spring, I learned I was pregnant. For me, that meant my next opportunity needed to be fully remote.
I do not recommend job searching while pregnant. But my status did help me ultimately accept a role with a well-run, financially stable, fully remote nonprofit.
I worked there for about three months before giving birth in December 2023 and taking leave. Now I’ve been back for a month, and I am so grateful to Past Me and my ability to currently be with my baby.
Past Me very deliberately selected an employment situation that would be compatible with the early months of infant care, and Present Me is immensely thankful.
My colleagues are very accepting of Baby A’s presence in online meetings—which is good, since the entire company accidentally heard me coo, “Do you need a diaper?” during yesterday’s All Staff.
And since Baby A doesn’t yet tolerate prolonged attention from other caregivers, she certainly has no objection to me wearing her while I work at a makeshift standing desk (aka a bookshelf).
I understand it won’t always be this way. That’s exactly why I’m so grateful for today.
Love > fear,
Christina
