Nanovacations
This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for nanovacations.*
What’s a nanovacation? Not a real word, perhaps, but definitely a thing I am about to take—otherwise known as a BREAK.
I feel so, so fortunate to (a) be able to afford in-home child care and (b) have found a wonderful caregiver whom I trust and respect. She’s here for a few hours most weekdays and I use every minute of that time…primarily to work.
And that’s on purpose. I want to use my skills and intelligence in multiple ways. And while I believe raising my child well is the most important work I can do, as he gets older, I’m finding room for other kinds of work, too.
All of which is to say that when the caregiver is here, I feel internal pressure to make the most of that time—particularly to use it for earning money since I am spending money.
But not today!
Today I am taking a break. As soon as I press send, I am going to draw a hot bath and snuggle up with the latest New Yorker—something I can’t read in front of the baby, by the way, because he is obsessed with tearing the pages.
I’m calling it a nanovacation, and I don’t mind at all that it will be short. I’m just grateful it can happen.
Love > fear,
Christina
*I started out labeling my hour off as a “microvacation,” but, trained journalist that I am, I couldn’t resist researching for a quick minute, and it turns out that those already exist—also known as “micro-cations,” they’re typically 2–4 day trips. I’m taking something a bit shorter than that, so…now nanovacations exist! Maybe you want to book one, too?
