Kitchens
This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for kitchens.
Yes, kitchens, like, the rooms in our houses where we most often make food. And also larger kitchens in larger places that make more food for more people. But especially for my own kitchen, which I all too often take for granted.
Although I’ve never much identified as a “cook” (as any of my past roommates—and certainly my current partner—can attest), now that B is starting to explore solid foods and also now that I have less career-related work than I used to, I’ve been spending more time preparing meals.
And the more time I spend in our kitchen, the more grateful I am for it. I have lived in a lot of apartments with tiny kitchens; we’re talking no space to walk, no room for full-size appliances. My last place in NYC had, no joke, 14 inches of counter space.
Now I live in a house with a kitchen that has so much floor space I can stick a baby on a blanket and still have room to walk around him, and not only are the appliances full-size, they include a dishwasher. And there is so much counter space! And so many safely wired, fully functioning electrical outlets. Plus a deep sink with a...wait for it...garbage disposal.
Maybe that description sounds normal to you. And if so, lucky you. I hope you appreciate your kitchen, too.
Love > fear,
Christina
p.s. Whether you like your kitchen or not, I urge you to stay home with it as much as possible (and when you can’t, wear masks and wash your hands). Unfortunately COVID does not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, and we each bear responsibility for keeping our neighbors safe in addition to protecting ourselves. Thank you for doing your part.
