Half a pan of acceptably stale brownies
This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for half a pan of acceptably stale brownies.
On Sunday, it snowed. I cooked a casserole, and I baked brownies. The brownies were from a box. It was a nice box, and the brownies came out even better than I imagined they would.
Obviously I ate an entire row right away, while they were still warm. And I was certainly grateful for that experience.
But I’m especially grateful for what I encountered the next day, which was half a pan of acceptably stale brownies.
Yes, a full 24 hours passed before I got around to putting them in Pyrex. And in the meantime my toddler managed to pull the metal pan from the counter to the floor and poke a few holes here and there.
Still, when I rediscovered the pan late the following afternoon, discreetly hidden under a loose kitchen towel, I was not disappointed. The remaining brownies were delicious, and so acceptably stale. And I remembered all over again how EASY they had been to make, and how they had filled the house with the scent of chocolate warmth while they baked and snow fell.
And as it turns out, half a pan of acceptably stale brownies, once transferred to a glass storage dish with an airtight lid, lasted several more days.
In fact, I just had the last two for breakfast, and I am grateful.
Love > fear,
