Everything I have to lose
This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for everything I have to lose.
If that sounds trite I assure you it is not. I have felt accosted by loss in recent days; none of it mine—and all of it a reminder that it could so easily be mine.
When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose, and I am grateful to feel the opposite of that: I have a lot to lose.
I have a lot, and I am grateful for it all.
Also, everything I have to lose? I do have to lose it. As in, keeping anything forever is simply not an option.
Loss is an inescapable aspect of living. (After all, as it’s been said, no one gets out of here alive.)
And I believe loss is also an inescapable aspect of love.
There’s a lecture by Buddhist teacher Susan Piver that, while no longer available online, remains firmly in my memory (and semi-documented in a post about true love).
One of Piver’s observations was that every love relationship results in loss—even the best-case scenario ends with “till death do us part.”
So, yes. Life is loss. Love is loss.
And also, life is love.
All of which is to say, since I do have to lose everything eventually, I am grateful I have so much to love.
Love > fear,
Christina
