Backup
This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for backup.
Let me preface this by saying that I don’t think disagreements are primarily about taking sides.
However! Yesterday I was in a disagreement with someone (who I happen to be married to), and today I was reviewing it with a third-party witness (who happens to be my mother-in-law).
I was looking to identify my part in the situation—could she confirm whether my behavior had been troubling? I really wanted to know her perspective, because obviously I thought I was completely in the right, but I also know most circumstances are a blend of truths. I wanted to make more room for other views.
Except, instead what happened was, my MIL full-on agreed with me. And then she said, “I have your back.”
There is no doubt in my mind that my spouse and I are a team, and one of the things I like best about us is our ability to kindly find our way through conflict.
But it still feels good to have backup.
Love > fear,
