Accountabilibuddies
This #thankyouthursday I am grateful for accountabilibuddies.
My friend Miki taught me that word years ago, when she invited me to be part of a small group of women who met online for weekly check-ins. Every Sunday night my accountabilibuddies and I would share updates since our last call and set (achievable!) goals for the days ahead.
Fast forward to today, and I am still in need of external motivation to support my growth.
For example, I recently joined a fitness community called MommaStrong, which gave me the option of getting assigned to a “squad” of other members.
These people are total strangers other than the fact that they, like me, are mothers who want to take care of their bodies. Yet sharing text messages with them really helps me show up and exercise.
Similarly, I’ve been wanting to meditate more regularly. Well actually, that’s not true: I’ve been wanting to more regularly receive the BENEFITS of meditation, but I haven’t particularly wanted to MEDITATE.
However, I have a friend who DOES legitimately want to meditate more often, and she asked me to help her be accountable, and now we are each meditating daily on Insight Timer and texting each other after we’re done.
And, one more example—the Americans of Conscience Checklist. Jen Hofmann, its creator, isn’t precisely an acountabilibuddy to me, since we don’t communicate directly. But her weekly emails do motivate me to take meaningful action, and when I get the opportunity to check a box on her list,* I like to think I am motivating her, too.
*Speaking of opportunities to check boxes, there’s a good one this Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.
So yeah. I can do some things all right on my own. But I can do more when I receive support and motivation, and I am grateful for the accountabilibuddies who help me.
Love > fear,
Christina
